The biggest advantage Xbox has over PS2 for DVD playback is that it operates very quietly. The PS2 runs loudly and is very distracting, especially during quiet parts of a movie, or during any part if you pay attention to audio.
As for image quality, the Xbox actually surprised me. The picture might not be as good as many high-end DVD players, and, of course, there's no progressive scan, but it is better than average.
Conclusion
Buy one. Even if you have a primary DVD player, the Xbox would be a great second player, in a bedroom, study, etc. It's also nice that Microsoft included such niceties as the zoom feature as well. If only it had a power button, but that's what third parties are for.
